Counseling in the Cincinnati/Dayton Area
Many people are scared to visit a therapist. Here's what happens in a typical session...I have two offices to choose from, one in a doctor's office, and the other in a quaint little coffee shop in Springboro (the office is on the second floor in a private room). I purposely chose offices where it would not be obvious to casual observers that clients are coming to see a therapist. If you happen to run into a friend or co-worker, they would probably assume you were either going to the doctor, or getting some coffee.  I'm not a very formal person, so I'm typically in jeans and tennies.

When you call for an appointment, chances are good that I will have to call you back, because I'm in session with another client. I will return your call as soon as possible, and will try to schedule you at a mutually convenient time. If you have an email address, I will typically email you intake forms to complete and bring with you at your first session. We'll briefly discuss your forms at the initial session. For payment, I accept cash, checks and credit cards.

A session is much like any other conversation that you've had before. I'll ask you questions, and then listen for the answers. The difference is that in therapy, the conversation is all about you. I don't tell you about my day, my life, or my children. It's your time to vent, explore and reflect. My job is to hold sacred ground. From time to time, I may ask that you read a book, watch a movie, or work on a worksheet that I have prepared for you before our next session.  A typical session lasts 45 minutes, and I'm told the time flies by. Depending on your circumstance, you might come to therapy once a week or once every other week. If you are in the midst of serious addiction, or if you are suicidal, you may need to come more often than once a week.

It is a common misconception that therapists can read minds. If I could, I certainly would have hit the lottery by now! While I am trained to observe behavior and look for solutions, I don't put you under a microscope and analyze you're every move and word. I look for themes that run through your life.

The therapeutic relationship is a bit different in another way. I am bound by law to release information to authorities in a few instances...If you are going to harm yourself, harm someone else, or if there is child or elder abuse, I MUST release information to the appropriate law enforcement agency. Also, If I am ordered by the court to release your records, I must comply. Please realize that I will make every effort to protect your information to the fullest extent I am able.

If you have any other questions, or would like to schedule an appointment, please call 937-660-8190.
