FAQs

Q: How can I tell if my teen son is really suicidal?
A: When we look for suicidal behavior, we take a lot of information into         consideration. Has the teen ever attempted suicide before? How serious do they seem about an attempt? Have they given up on the world? Can they see a future for themselves? Have they given away personal belongings or written a note? Do they have a plan on how they will commit suicide? Do they have access to the weapons in their plan? What kind of weapons or medications do they have access to?(this includes at friends/relatives houses they may visit) Are they under medical supervision? Do they have a pact with a friend to die together? It is ALWAYS best to have your child evaluated for suicidal tendencies if you think there is a remote chance they might take their life. Many teens are impulsive, they do things without thinking. It's best to have a professional talk to them rather than to hope you aren't missing something important. If you're in the Dayton/Cincinnati area, I always recommend taking your child (under 18) to Kettering Hospital Youth Services for an evaluation. They specialize in psychiatric emergencies for youth. (They are located at 5350 Lamme Rd. Dayton, OH 45439) If you have a medical emergency such as your teen has just told you that they took too many pills, or they've hurt themselves and need medical attention, then call 911 to get them to the nearest emergency room ASAP. KHYS does NOT have ER staff on site to deal with medical emergencies.

Q: My wife and I have been married for 21 years. We have three beautiful kids and have built a life together. Yesterday out of the blue, she told me that she doesn't know if she wants to be married anymore. Can you help?
A: This is a common problem. Surprisingly, the majority of my relationship counseling clients are couples who have been together for over 15 years. Long term relationships sometimes get stagnant and need some work. While I can't guarantee your outcome, I've seen many couples get past this stage and have a more rewarding relationship because they've been through this period of doubt. Sometimes it takes some individual counseling (with another therapist) to clear things up in order for the relationship to move forward. It all depends on the commitment of the couple.

Q: My husband has been drinking every night, and has lost his job. If I come to counseling, can I fix him?
A: NO. You cannot fix another person, you can only fix yourself.
